'I've been better' as in I just went through mind altering hallucinations which caused my entire world view to crumble to the ground or 'I've been better' because of something else?
[Will knows how he would feel if he woke up and Nico wasn't there. But he also knew that he wasn't Wille and didn't want to assume anything. Or at least try. He'd slowly realized he had a bad habit of jumping to conclusions.]
